I want to learn to play bass! Tell me about Jon Liebman’s new online lessons.
It’s a critically-acclaimed series for bass players and wannabe bass players. The whole concept is about learning to play and mastering electric and/or acoustic bass techniques by way of a collection of grooves in a wide variety of musical styles.
Do I need a teacher?
It depends. If you’re brand new to the instrument, these online lessons can be used as part of a teacher’s lesson plans, though that’s not necessarily required. Everyone’s different and we all learn at our own pace. Regardless of whether you approach these lessons on your own or with the aid of a teacher, we’re confident you’ll gain a lot from them!
I’m a beginner. Is that okay?
Absolutely! While some of the selections can get rather advanced, others are actually quite simple. Keep in mind that most of the bass lines you’ll be called upon to play in the real world are simple. In your case, you’ll probably want to start with the “Beginners” and “Easy” categories. In addition, the “Bassics” category incorporates the fundamentals of bass playing and overall fingerboard mastery into some simple grooves you’re sure to enjoy playing. In addition, all of the videos include demonstrations at both fast and slow tempos, giving you a chance to “nail” each piece while progressing at your own speed.
So, who is this “Jon Liebman” guy, anyway?
Jon Liebman is a world-renowned bass player, composer, author and educator. Jon has written eight bass instructional books, published by Hal Leonard Corp. They are:
Bass Grooves: The Ultimate Collection
Play Like Jaco Pastorius: The Ultimate Bass Lesson
FIRST 15 LESSONS: Bass Guitar
Jon’s books have sold over 100,000 copies across the globe and have become a mainstay in the bass curricula at many music schools throughout the world. Jon’s books have also been translated into German, French and Japanese. All of Jon’s books are available in this site’s online store.
Additionally, Jon is the founder and creator of the popular “For Bass Players Only” website, which has been highly praised by a veritable who’s who of bass royalty, including John Patitucci, Victor Wooten, Jeff Berlin, Nathan East, Mark Egan, Bootsy Collins, Stuart Hamm, Chuck Rainey, Leland Sklar and dozens more. You can read more about Jon in his Bio.
I already have all of Jon’s books. Why should I also subscribe to his online bass series?
For years, people who purchased Jon’s books have been requesting an online series so they can watch Jon in action. While all of Jon’s books provide an invaluable resource for learning to play and groove on the bass, this online series, which includes all new and different material from Jon’s books, will significantly augment your bass playing abilities, creating synergies unparalleled by either the books or the videos alone.
I’m an upright player. Do you have anything for me?
You bet! In addition to an entire category devoted 100% to upright bass, Jon’s series includes lots of examples perfectly suited to the upright, particularly in the “Jazz & Blues” category. In fact, some videos include Jon using his upright bass to demonstrate.
How is this series different from other tutorial programs I can find online?
We’re glad you asked! Several great qualities make Jon’s online bass series stand out from the rest:
For one, Jon has “slipped in” carefully crafted bass patterns within each groove to help you master various elements of bass technique. While you’re grooving away, making music, you won’t even realize you’re also mastering your scales, arpeggios, chromatic runs and overall fingerboard proficiency! All the while, you’ll be learning and grooving in a multitude of genres, from jazz and blues to rock and metal, funk/R&B, slapping and more.
As Jon walks you through the process, he demonstrates the music in each video, first at full tempo, then slowly. Afterwards, it’s your turn! Once he illustrates each selection, Jon steps aside, letting you play along with the band!
Perhaps the most unique element of these videos is in how each example is structured, particularly when Jon sits out. While the rest of the band does its thing, you’re free to practice the easier examples or the more challenging ones, whatever you’re ready to take on. The versatility makes each lesson more flexible, practical, efficient and enjoyable.

How do I learn the music?
For one, the music will be displayed on the screen while it’s being played, making it easy for you to follow along. Additionally, you’ll be able to download a PDF of every musical example. Each PDF includes standard musical notation, as well as tablature (TAB).
My sight reading’s not so hot. Is that a problem?
Jon can help you there too! This series includes a well organized “Sight Reading” category that will take you through the process, step-by-step, by way of Jon’s inimitable, easy-going approach. In addition, all the lessons throughout this series will prove enormously helpful in getting your reading together as well. For one, you’ll see each example demonstrated, fast then slow, while hearing exactly what it’s supposed to sound like. Every selection includes not only standard music notation, but tablature (TAB) as well, giving you a head start toward getting those notes under your fingers.
We recommend you wean yourself away from the TAB as quickly as possible, though, learning to read actual music notes. It will increase your level of professionalism immeasurably.
Do I need any special equipment, books or software to use the library?
Nope! All you need is a good computer with Internet access (along with the “usual” stuff that comes with it, like Adobe Acrobat Reader). Obviously, if you want to print out the PDFs, you’ll need a printer too.
How do I get the videos? Do you stream them directly to my computer?
That’s exactly how we do it! As a subscriber, you’ll have full, unlimited access to the entire library, which is streamed right to your computer.
This library is incredibly comprehensive! Do I need to follow the whole video sequence in order?
Not if you don’t want to. This series pretty well covers the entire spectrum of musical difficulty. In most cases, the primary difference is in the genre. So if you’re feeling “bluesy” one day and “metally” the next, go for it!
What if I have a question or need help with something?
Ask any of the 100,000+ of people who have bought Jon’s books over the years and they’re sure to tell you how Jon is always happy to respond to questions about his publications and is very eager to help. Contact him directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What if I’m having technical problems?
If you’re experiencing any trouble with the lesson exercises, tools or other interactive features, make sure you don’t have too many windows open or ads running, as this can slow things down or create problems. Generally speaking, if you can watch a YouTube video, you should be set.
What about with the PDF file?
Same thing. If you’re having trouble viewing or printing any PDF files on the site, make sure you have the most recent version Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. If you’re using another non-Adobe program to read PDFs, you may experience problems.
Okay, so how much is all this stuff going to cost me?
You’ve got a few options. The standard subscription rate is $12.99 per month (an incredible value, when you think about it!). You can also buy a 6-month subscription for $69.99, saving yourself another 10%.
If you really want to save yourself some money, the 12-month package will run you $129.99, giving you two whole months for free! All subscription packages renew automatically, so you won’t have the hassle of signing up again and again.
What kind of payment options do you have?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
What if I change my mind after signing up?
Subscription payments are non-refundable. If you’re worried you won’t absolutely love it (even after taking into account the ever-present worldwide “kudos” Jon receives for his bass instruction resources, not to mention the free videos which show you exactly what to expect), then you might want to sign up for the month-to-month plan.
Can I change my subscription once I sign up?
You can’t change in mid-cycle, however, if you’re on a monthly or 6-month plan, you’ll likely want to upgrade to a longer period for better pricing.
Sounds good to me! Is the video library finished?
Not by a longshot! While there are currently loads of lessons to keep you busy, we plan to add new videos all the time (upright, fretless, 5-string – you name it!). Don’t worry about not finding out about our new additions, though. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as our library grows.
Yeah, but won’t that …
Nope! Your subscription rate won’t increase solely because the library grows. Rather, your membership will actually increase in value!
Sounds great! How do I sign up?
